Recovery with Reiki

Diana Kelly

Using Reiki for Clients in Recovery

I have been leading Reiki groups, individual sessions and consultations at a prominent Treatment Center in Sacramento for the past 18 months. The two-hour groups consist of a crystal bowl toning to set the space, and then giving Reiki to each person, whose numbers range from 1 to 15 people per group. If there is time after the group we debrief on the experience and I offer some guidance on how to work with this in their recovery program.

My success in offering this fairly novel therapeutic process in recovery centers has been marked by the consistent high praise I get from the clients, staff and program administrators. I have helped clients by bringing relief from sleep issues, migraines, physical pain, emotional blocks, as well as offering complementary support in the broader clinical work with anxiety, depression and trauma.

Aside from working with clients, staff have come to me to ask for Reiki support to help the what is often high stress work environments. The staff have often reported how helpful the groups are because this calming and healing resource helps the clients to better focus on the recovery program. Having worked as a staff in the program, I am very aware of how important it is to know how my work can help a client and when a client’s issues need to be referred to the therapy and recovery staff. We work in tandem and the complementary process has received lots of praise and validation from the clients.

Background

I have worked with Reiki and various energy healing modalities since 1999. Often clients will experience unusual levels of relaxation, sometimes bringing up emotions that have been less accessible due to their physical and emotional tension. At times I’ll point the client to their therapeutic support to help them with these emotions, but I can be a valuable witness to the basics of their experience when it comes up.

The spiritual model that I bring is a complement to the Twelve Step program as well as other well-know treatment programs and helps to bring some additional support to that central component of the recovery program. Some clients have reported to me that they have found new resources of the spiritual connection with their higher power, through the experience of Reiki, that brings a fresh inspiration and commitment to their recovery. There is no dogma to this spiritual approach even though I have trained extensively in eastern and western spiritual and religious systems.

I maintain impeccable professional boundaries with clients with whom touch is part of the Reiki process. I have been highly regarded in Treatment Center recovery programs because of the wisdom and maturity that I hold, as the following testimonials describe.

Testimonials

Diana introduced me to Reiki and Sound Bowl Healing.  I made fun of her and her beliefs because eastern medicine and non-traditional healing were silly, strange, and unknown to me. The first session was amazing.  I was able to relax and clear my mind like never before.  I felt a sense of peace and clarity, but it took a few sessions for me to truly succumb to the feelings because of my skepticism. I really enjoyed it, and my mind is open to a lot of new things now.  The entire house enjoyed Diana’s Reiki sessions.  It was unreal to see the change in the rehab house after her meditation and healing classes; everyone was relaxed and calm with their petty drama shoved to the background. I have just recently passed nine months of sobriety, and I could not have done it without Diana.  She is truly a gem with the kindest of souls.  Diana and her classes are the most missed thing from my time in rehab.  I am amazed at the way she can connect with all types of people and personalities. Diana has helped so many, and she will continue to help anyone she interacts with.  Diana is a must have at any successful rehabilitation facility.

The Reiki Sessions have been extremely valuable and rewarding for me. The day of my first session, I had excruciating pain in my lower right abdomen area. Diana focused on that pain, and it was significantly reduced. After the session we were speaking, and she mentioned she had focused a healing blue light on me. I was amazed because while she was touching me, I saw a blue light. At the time I thought it was me reconnecting with my spiritual self. A few days later, the pain in my abdomen disappeared entirely.

During the second session, I was suffering from severe edema in my lower legs and feet. Diana spent a lot of time focusing on my legs and the blue light I saw was stronger and it remained after Diana moved away, unlike the previous week when the light disappeared as she moved on to the next person. In addition, I mentioned in the second session that I had been suffering from headaches the past few days. When she first touched my head, the headache became much more pronounced, but after a few minutes, the headache completely disappeared.

I have become completely convinced of the healing power of Reiki and find it extremely valuable in my treatment.
